Discussion: Kick Off for Celebrations Category
Nancy Pimental led the meeting. We reviewed the preliminary list of celebrations/community ideas, modified them, and identified lead people
Birthday Party (Nancy Pimental and Richard Silver). We agreed that we would piggy back the birthday party on the New Years’ Day celebration held at the Pierce House. 1,000-1,200 people attend typically, and Pierce House puts up a tent for the event. We will add birthday cake and ice cream, etc. to the First Day festivities
Adams/Jefferson Debate (Sara Mattes) Sara reported that the people who do this will be available in early February. It would involve the schools, too. This event is under the “historical” track.
Actual Day Dedication. (Historical Society and Susan Harding). We agreed that the dedication should take place on April 23, which is one of the two days considered the “actual birthday.” April 19th is full of revolutionary war commemoration, and we don’t want to distract. >?? Will research the availability of the Codman Carriage House for the event. The Codman house dates from 1741, so it would be historically appropriate. In addition, the Codman family had a key role in the founding and naming of Lincoln. Susan and Joan will work to determine what the scope of events will be to be sure that Codman will be an appropriate location.
July 4th Intergenerational Picnic at Pierce Park (Nancy and Dan). Following the parade, will have a big Pierce Park party with kids rides, games, etc. Many issues to be determined include parade route, parking, music volume, selection of events, etc. Will explore possibility of Lincoln artists’ art show inside. Probably need another person to run the logistics.
DeCordova Bash (Stacy) DeCordova has enthusiastically offered us October 16th for the ball. We decided that it should be bar and hors d’oevres rather than dinner. Will be a tent.
Other events Bill Stason reported that the Minutemen events around April 19th are planned with input from the Minuteman Park, other town minutemen and the Lincoln minutemen. We agreed that those events probably don’t need to be modified for the 250th, but there will be involvement from the Minutemen in other events. Dan Pereira reported that the Rec. Department’s Winter Carnival is in early planning by Susan Winship. They will look at 250th tie-ins.
Other Items
Sarah will call Rob Todd to see if we can include a list of key 250th events in the historical society calendar, and what the deadline for providing the information is
We don’t have a schools lead yet, although Sara is working on it with Patty Salem. Our next meeting was a schools meeting, and we will change that agenda (see below). Sara reiterated the importance of being sensitive to the school’s constraints as we think about how to work with them.
Sara and Peg are contacting land and stewardship folks for the May 30 meeting.
250th group needs to display some information this fourth of July to build excitement for next year. We will explore doing a float in this year’s parade.
Tucker reported that the Emerson Auxiliary phone book will have something 250th-ish on the cover. Proceeds will of course go to Emerson.
Doug Stinson, local auctioneer, is willing to provide some funding in return for advertising.
