LINCOLN COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of Board Meeting, January 10, 2006

The meeting was opened at 3:05 by Julie Pugh, chairperson.

Present:  Peggy Boyer, John Caswell, Avram Kalisky, Bob Lenington, Fez Morse, Julie Pugh, Karen Santucci, Mary Sheldon, Bob Sutherland, Dot Taylor, Pat Thompson, and Sara Mattes (selectman).

The minutes were approved with one correction:  Neighborhood Meetings – Bob Sutherland.

Treasurer’s Report – Bob Lenington
The budget is in good shape.  We’re a little behind in spending.

Director’s Report – Karen Santucci
The February calendar was reviewed.  The idea of having a COA sponsored Super Bowl party was discussed, but not acted upon.
Karen will be away Feb. 23 – March 5.  Liz King will be away the week of March 6.
Susan Pope has extended an invitation to come to the State House. The group decided to accept the invitation, open it to everyone, and charge participants for the bus.
The Selectmen will sponsor a meeting on Monday, January 30th to hear about the New England Deaconess Association’s proposal to develop the BIIC land.
Dr. Cannon was presented with the Boston Post cane five days before he died.  He was Lincoln’s oldest registered voter.

Programs – Peggy Boyer
The idea of a monthly discussion group was presented.  Friday noon was proposed, with a first meeting on February 24.

Nominating Committee
A report will be made next month.

Trips – Bob Sutherland
About 35 people have signed up for the January trip to the Science Museum.

FCOA – Avram Kalisky
A report will be made at Town Meeting about the profit from the Calendar project.
The calendar of events for the year is set.  The volunteer luncheon and annual meeting will be May 4th.  The FCOA would like a COA member to be a representative to their committee.  Bob Lenington volunteered.

Office Coverage
Issues concerning office coverage were discussed.  Should two people be in the office for all open hours?  Is it safe for just one person to be in the building?  John Caswell asked if the office could be closed on Friday, and thought the Town should review this matter.  Karen suggested we look ahead to two full time office people, as requests and work are growing rapidly.  Sara Mattes said a facility review is going to be done, and the COA should be included in this process.

Monthly Lincoln Journal Articles
This opportunity has been offered by Cheryl Lecesse, editor of the Journal.  The decision was made to submit articles, but not monthly.

Preparation for Baby Boomers
This topic was briefly discussed, leaving further discussion for another meeting.

John Caswell reported that Greater Boston Elderly Legal Services offers free legal help to Seniors in need.  John also announced that he will be wanting to retire from SHINE, and MSS, and would like a second person involved

Sara Mattes said that the Selectmen will begin negotiations with the owners of the Ridge Road apartments.

John Sutherland requested a special meeting to decide which of the ideas coming from the neighborhood meetings should be implemented.  A noon meeting on January 17th was set.

The meeting adjourned at 4:30 P.M.

The next meeting will be February 14th, at 3:00 P.M., in Bemis Hall.
