 LINCOLN COUNCIL ON AGING
Board Meeting   October 10, 2006

Attending were the entire board, Karen Santucci (Director), Avram Kalisky (FCOA) and participants of the Enhanced Senior Services Group: (Peggy Schmertzler, Ginny Lemire, Joanna Hopkins, Mary Terrell, Gordon Winchell and Henry Slayter.)

The meeting was called to order by chairman Bob Sutherland at 3PM.

1)      The minutes of our September meeting were accepted.

2)      Bob Lenington (Treasurer) stated that we have just received the Town’s August financial report, and that there are no red flags. Our expenditures for the period were below 16.7percent.

3)  Director’s Report
   a. Karen spoke of the new items at Bemis Hall
Refrigerator in the kitchen funded by the Town
Mailbox system for volunteers and staff in Liz’s office
Cleaning and scotch-guarding of Map Room chairs,   funded by the FCOA
Shades and picture frames in the computer room,  funded by the FCOA
Portable phone for use by morning volunteers .funded by the FCOA
   b. She called our attention to the November calendar
Nov. 4 Special State of the Town Meeting (the Deaconess proposal is early on the AM agenda)
        Nov. 7-rescheduled board meeting
Nov. 9-Memorial Tea for Ruth Barbarow and future sale of Ruth’s paintings by FCOA
        Nov.16-Men’s coffee
Nov. 18- Flu Clinic (a sign up sheet for volunteers was circulated)
   c. The Verizon grant. Apparently Verizon won’t give senior discounts, but gives grants
to non profits such as our FCOA. Suggestion of computers, lectures for seniors, etc.

4) Enhanced Senior Services
Peggy Schmertzler presented the seven identified needs (see Proposal for Additional Senior Services)
Members of her group spoke about the issues and our board members responded with concern about the added work load which would be required of our staff.  We concluded that we need more and younger volunteers. We thanked and praised the Enhanced Senior Services people, encouraging the members to help with publicity and volunteering. We said that, if our staff is increased, we may be able to accommodate increasing requests for service within our scope. This group, while not representing the Council on Aging, brings a welcome input.
Bob S., Julie and Karen will meet to draft a letter of gratitude to them for their research and enthusiasm.

5) FCOA: Avram talked about the Top of the Town party, scheduled for Dec. 3, the sale of books by Mr. Haroian, and the sale of Ruth Barbarow’s art.

6) John Caswell gave information on Minuteman Senior Services and the Medicare D presentation Nov.7
The meeting was adjourned at 4:52 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Julie Pugh, Recorder
