LINCOLN COUNCIL ON AGING
Board Meeting February 13, 2007
Present were: Peggy Boyer, Flo Caras, John Caswell, Bob Curtiss, Bob Lennington, Fez Morse, Julie Pugh, Mary Sheldon, Bob Sutherland, Dot Taylor, Avram Kalisky (Friends) and Karen Santucci (COA Director)
1) Recorder’s Minutes. Paragraph 5/d was corrected. Bob S. stated that board members who are willing to continue to serve don’t have to appear before the Selectmen until contacted by them. The minutes were approved with this correction.
2) Treasurer’s Report: Bob L. explained the Year to Date Budget. $57,980 has been spent so far.
3) Director’s Report:
a) Calling attention to the March calendar, Karen informed us that she will be attending the National Council on Aging Conference in Chicago. There will be a joint meeting of both boards with a noon lunch on March 13.
b) Verizon Grant: Avram, Harold, Bob S. and Bob C. met with the office environment computer rep from whom we purchased our projector.
c) The Boston Post Cane will be awarded to Tom Dunn (age 98) at the March Town Meeting.
d) Mac Computer - Alice Boyce may rent it. . (Our computer tutors will delete the donor’s name and information.)
e) Programs: Deaconess (The Groves) proposes an educational program. Jim Callahan will show a video and offer a simple sandwich lunch for 40 elders at Bemis Hall in April. Karen is organizing this.
f) Cambridge Trust (Colt Nevens) offered to talk about estate planning, trusts, wills, etc. Perhaps there can be a seminar which might attract baby boomers. We should include Jack Fisher (Lexington Elder lawyer) and Hans Hug (Long Term Care expert). Julie, Peggy and Bob C. will organize this program for next fall.
4) Clinics: Dot reports that all clinics are going smoothly.
5) Trips: Flo described the April 12 trip to the Museum of Natl. Heritage in Lexington, followed by a lunch at MMVo-Tech. The RI Flower/Garden show organized by Judy will include at least 16 participants. The March 14 trip to The Skellig Pub has received 12 reservations as of today.
6) SHINE: John Caswell will be out of commission during March and April due to hip replacement. He’d like to be replaced as SHINE counselor and as board member of Minute Man Senior Services.
7) Publicity: it’s going well. Jack McCandless is doing a great job!
8) Master Plan: Fez attended the last meeting of the Comprehensive Long-Range Planning. Their consultant, Judy Barrett gave a very impressive presentation. The next meeting will be Feb. 21. This project will take two years, with the final report in Nov. 2008. Their budget ($95,000) will be presented at Town Meeting.
9) Friends: Avram reported that this morning’s meeting of the Friends was ‘short and small’. He talked about the Spring Fling (4/14), the Volunteer Luncheon (5/10) with guest of honor-Cheryl Lecesse, the Ruth Barbarow art show and auction, and his being on a committee for new exterior lighting at Bemis Hall.
10) Housing: Mary attended this morning’s Housing Commission Meeting and says that the 2 modular units on Sunnyside Lane will be available in 2-3 months.
