DISCUSSION ITEMS
Trail Marking System
Angela Seaborg presented a proposal that summarized previous ideas and conversations regarding the trail marking system. Buzz Constable was at the discussion and provided valuable institutional memory and preliminary coordination with the LLCT.
Proposed Trail Marking System
Prepared by Angela Seaborg and Anna Wilkins on May 2, 2006
? ON MAPS - USE UPDATED, ACCURATE TRAIL LAYER
? ON MAPS - DESIGNATE FIRE ROADS AS A DOUBLE LINE
? ON PUBLIC SAFETY MAPS - ADD LOCKED GATES AND NUMBERS
? IN FIELD - REMOVE EXISTING NUMBERED POSTS
?? Do we care about the yellow and red discs and what they mean ?? – define on map??
? CLARIFY PUBLIC SAFETY SYSTEM WITH LABELS ON FUTURE MAPS
· On maps - use existing grid divisions, but add full grid lines over map.
· On maps - insert sample subdivided grid (current a,b,c,d system – what is it??) and brief description in legend.
· In field - continue writing grid labels on trail markers.
? NAME AND POST MAJOR TRAILS
· Would help people in field who do not have trail map.
· Stay consistent with existing trail names where appropriate.
ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS:
· No changes or additions to current system.
· Mark major trails with a letter or other symbol (color) instead of name.
· Mark side trails with minor letter or symbol associated with major letter or symbol. (e.g. Aa, like oak posts)
· Install lettered posts at major trail intersections (Similar to Weston's map)
· Post mini-maps with 'You are Here' dots at major intersections.
· Post conservation area maps at trail heads (e.g. Mt. Misery, Pine Hill)
The Commission and Buzz agreed to the following initial steps:
· remove the numbered wooden posts,
· use the updated trail layer on future GIS maps,
· designate fire roads as a double line on future GIS maps,
· add locked gates and numbers to future public safety maps,
· create stippled 'fields layer' and add to future GIS maps,
· use the existing grid system with both lat/long and letter/number labeling system,
· conservation staff will begin swapping yellow discs with red ones on minor trails.
New England Deaconess
David Katsuki and Tom Gumbart will be at the meeting on Thursday May 4th. Wetlands crossings for property access during Route 2 Construction will be the primary focus for the Conservation Commission.
Open Space Map
Angela Seaborg has completed an updated base map of the Open Space Map. The next step is to designate a time to review the current Lands of Conservation Interest. This will serve as a preliminary step in starting the Open Space Planning Process.
New Conservation Commissioners
Selectmen will be setting up a time to interview new Commissioners. Tom is coordinating directly with Tim Higgins to line up appointments during the Selectmen's May 15th meeting.
Rte 126 Crosswalk
Chris Bibbo has prepared a design and Tom and Officer Gallo will meet to discuss the plan.
Town Composting
Peter Von Mertens brought up the idea of setting up a town composting area and there was some discussion of the feasibility and desirability of such a project.~Conservation Staff will look into this matter.
