DISCUSSION ITEMS

Review of public forum on trail use

The Commission reviewed an e-mail from Tim Higgins on behalf of the Board of Selectmen regarding additional public discussion concerning amendments to the trail-use regulations. The Commission held a public forum and gather feedback from the community on all aspects of the trails. In response to feedback and action items outlined during the Open Space Planning process and information gathered during the public forum, the Commission is considering opening a limited number of trails on town-owned conservation land to bicycles. This would be done under the existing trail-use regulations and would have a trial period associated with it. No other changes in use are proposed at this time and changes to the trail-use regulations would occur during the Commission’s regular hearing process.

The Commission is currently working to identify potential trails for bicycle use with a particular focus on increasing access to central locations such as the schools and Lincoln Station and to create larger loops throughout town. They will coordinate with the Land Trust if and when necessary and will hold site visits to assess the physical conditions of the proposed trails.  Jim Meadors will prepare a letter describing the Commission’s current process and inviting the Board of Selectmen to a Commission meeting to discuss the topic further if they are interested.

The draft Open Space and Recreation Plan and its associated community survey results and action items have been available in the Conservation Office and on the Town Website since July 2007. The meeting minutes from the public forum on trail use are available in the Conservation Office and on the Town Website.

Review of public forum on deer hunting

Because several Commissioners weren’t able to attend this meeting, review of the public forum on deer hunting was postponed until a later date.

The Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies in the first game of the World Series with a score of 13-1.
