DISCUSSION ITEMS

Gas Station at Route 126
The owner of the gas station on Route 126 installed a propane tank within the buffer zone without permitting from the Conservation Commission. The tank was located on existing asphalt pavement. Tom Gumbart will arrange a site visit to discuss the work.

Pierce House Pond
Max Mason represented the Pierce House Committee with an informal request to remove existing cattails and other vegetation from the lower pond. The proposed work would include one day’s labor and consist of removing as much sediment and cattails as possible within that timeframe. The contractor would load the sediment and vegetation directly into a truck for disposal off-site. The Commission recognized the Committee’s desire to improve the aesthetics of the pond for the upcoming wedding season, but noted that this type of work is substantial enough to require permitting with respect to the Wetlands Protection Act and the Lincoln Wetlands Protection Bylaw. The Commission recognizes that both ponds and the culvert system at the Pierce House needs a significant amount of restoration work and this is a project that could be coordinated amongst the Town Boards and Organizations and could possibly receive funding through the Community Preservation Act.

In addition, the Pierce House Committee was before the Commission last fall with a request to fix a leak in the pond and this work has been completed.

Nyanza Natural Resource Restoration Planning
Funds are now available to do restoration work along the Sudbury River as part of the Nyanza Superfund Site remediation for mercury contamination that resulted from manufacturing activities that took place at the Ashland site from 1917 to 1978. A meeting will be held in Framingham on June 11th at 7pm. Conservation Commission and Staff and will try to attend.

Regulations for the Use of Conservation Land
The Commission will be re-visiting specific aspects of the regulations over the coming months. The first discussion will pertain to the trails as they relate to other planning efforts which are currently happening in Town.

HATS – Representation from Conservation
The Hanscom Area Towns Subcommittee would like a representative from the Conservation Commission as the group begins to discuss regional environmental concerns.

Turtle Creek Winery
Several residents have expressed concerns regarding herbicide and fungicide use on the vineyard. Kip Kumler provided information regarding chemicals that are used on the property

and has obtained his pesticide applicator’s license. The Agricultural Subcommitte of the Commission will meet with Kip Kumler to further discuss his practices and how best to protect trail users along the top of the Flint’s Field vineyard.
