Minutes of the January 7, 2003 meeting were approved with two corrections, which will be made.
Demolition Delay Review:
Leonard and Barbara Darling, 144 Trapelo Road:
Don Bartels, architect for 144 Trapelo Road, came before the members to discuss the proposed demolition of the existing dwelling at 144 Trapelo Road. He said that the owners had lived in the house for 25 years and had made additions and renovations and the house is now very chopped up and they wanted to start over and build a new dwelling, which would fit their needs now. The detached garage would not be demolished but would be turned into a shed. They would like to start as soon as possible. After a brief discussion, the members voted unanimously to approve the demolition application.
Other Business:
The members reviewed a letter from Randall Thompson voicing his disapproval of the new signpost structure and metal brackets at the Old Town Hall Exchange. After a brief discussion, the members felt that they should review the files in the Planning Board to see what was proposed. Elaine Carroll will get the application information and any pictures and pertinent minutes from the Planning Board for the members review and discussion at the next meeting.
The members discussed the Flint Homestead agreement presented at last month s meeting after they had had a chance to read it over. Although they agreed that preserving the Flint Homestead is a high priority, they felt that this was not the best alternative. The members felt that they needed to wait for Town Counsel s opinion. It was felt that Attorney Edward Foster or the owners should be informed that a Preservation Restriction Agreement was not a possibility but that there are other alternatives which they might consider. Henry Hoover, Jr. will get a copy of the SPNEA by-laws, which could be sent to Mr. Foster along with the Historic District by-laws.
The members were informed that the building at 20 Lewis Street (formerly known as the “pickle factory”) and the buildings on either side of it are being considered for demolition and the site of possible 40B construction. The members were very interested in preserving this building, as it is the only 19th Century business in Town that still exists. Jack MacLean will get more information on the building s origins.
-2-
The members continued an informal discussion with Jack MacLean and Henry Hoover, Jr., regarding the identification of houses for proposed additions to the Historic Districts. The focus was on the best way to move forward with specific goals. Some suggestions were to sort the list into smaller projects so that it could be broken down into steps, discussions in the neighborhoods before going to Town Meeting, go through starred list and come up with priority list to use as a test group and adding the style of house to the list created by Jack MacLean. Stefania Jha and Ken Hurd suggested that a data base program might be set up, which could be used to cross-reference houses under different categories. Elaine Carroll will look into whether the Town has any type of program that the members could use. Mr. Hoover will add the modernist houses in purple marker to the large map, which was originally created showing the proposed additions. He will come into the Building Department and
work with Elaine Carroll to identify where each parcel is on the map. The discussion will continue at a future meeting.
