LINCOLN DISABILITIES COMMISSION
Meeting Notes
March 6, 2006
Present: Rob Loud, Kitty Stein, Kathy Deickler, Adeline Naiman, Jill Harkaway
The minutes from the January meeting were approved.
Gabriela will be unable to attend 11am meetings, but will continue to stay in contact.
Award: It was decided that no award would be given by the Commission at Town Meeting this year. It was agreed that the Award would not be given pro-forma, but would be given only when merited.
Needs Survey: A survey of disability needs in the schools has been done. Rob will speak with Deborah Parkhurst and Tim Higgins to learn the results. Rob will also check with Karen to see if she has any information submitted by members of the community on disability needs. The town has not yet completed the survey for town facilities.
Train accessibility: Neither Tim Higgins nor Anita Scheipers has gotten back to Rob. Anita will follow up with Tim.
Library: Peter Sugar says there is no money to put into automatic door openers. Adeline has heard of a foundation who donated a set of doors to a library in Waltham. She will do research on this foundation. Rob would like to put a letter in the Library Committee file stating the needs for such doors for accessibility.
Trails: The plan for accessible trails has been put on the back burner because the deadline for requests had passed.
Town Meeting: A copy of the Warrant for Town Meeting was reviewed. Articles 14, 22, and 23 (and perhaps some others) were possibly related to issues of accessibility. Rob will contact the School Committee and the Library Committee before Town Meeting to gather more information.
A question was raised about the need for disabled young adult housing in Lincoln.
Rob has suggested that someone should write an article every year for The Journal in order to make the community aware of the existence of the Disability Commission.
Jill has volunteered to take over Abby’s job as Secretary.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 1, 2006
