LINCOLN DISABILITIES COMMISSION
Meeting Notes May 1, 2006
Present: Rob Loud, Kitty Stein, Kathy Deickler, Adeline Naiman, Anita Scheipers, Jill Harkaway
1. The minutes from March were approved with edits.
2. Jill Harkaway was nominated and approved as the new Secretary.
3. Town Facilities Survey: Anita asked for feedback from the Commission by the end of the week. Adeline reported that she got a support bar put into the ladies’ bathroom at Bemis Hall. She also reported problems with the front steps because there is no railing. It was also suggested that it would be useful to have a handicapped parking space designated by the door. It was also reported that the Handicapped Parking sign has been knocked down. The locked handicapped accessible door is also a problem; it would be useful if it were unlocked before any event. The inaccessibility of the 2nd floor of the Town Offices and the need for an elevator were also discussed.
4. Adeline reported back on her research into the Waltham accessibility funding. The Waltham Disabilities Commission has been assigned the money that the police collect from people they ticket who park in handicapped spaces. They take in $30-$40,000. a year. This year they were able to give three sets of doors to the city hall, without cost to the city. Can Lincoln do something similar?
5. Train Accessibility: Anita reported that Tim Higgins suggested the Disability Commission make a direct inquiry to the MBTA suggesting that they make the Lincoln stop fully accessible. Rob will write a formal letter to the Director of the MBTA.
6. Rob will write a letter about the library doors to the Chair of the Library Trustees.
7. Transfer Station: Adeline raised a concern about accessibility at the Transfer Station. It is difficult to park close enough to the receptacles. It is also sometimes difficult to get near the swap table because it is cluttered in front. It was suggested that the DPW workers should be outside and available to help when needed.
8. Gabriella reported by email to Rob about early screening for dyslexia.
9. Membership: By-laws require the Commission to have 5-9 members. Adeline needs to be formally appointed by the Town. Additional members will be sought.
10. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday September 11 at 11am.
