Minutes of March 3, 2008 Commission On Disabilities meeting:
Members Present: Rob Loud, Jim Spindler, Adeline Naiman, Kitty Stein, and Anita Scheipers.
Also present: Past members John Bingham and Sally Bobbitt, and Town Administrator Timothy Higgins
Meeting convened at 11:00 am.
Discussion and Action Items:
1) Minutes: The members present approved the minutes of the Feb 4, 2008 meeting. They will be placed on the web site and kept in hard-copy form in the Selectmen’s office.
2) Town Administrator Timothy Higgins, dropped by to thank outgoing member Kitty Stein for her many years of service to the Town as a founding member of the Commission on Disabilities, for this is her last meeting as a member of the Commission. Also present for the occasion were past members Sally Bobbitt and John Bingham. With their help the Commission reviewed its past accomplishments on behalf of disabled residents. They include but are not limited to installation of the elevator and other access improvements at Bemis Hall, accessible entrance and related improvements at the town offices, the automation of the Library door, the accessible bathroom at Codman Farm, the accessible parking at Linden Tree farm for access to Mt. Misery,
assisted listening devices purchased for town meetings, and the lift for the Codman Pool. For each of these to be carried through, the Commission is indebted to Dr. Stein for her ardent support.
3) The Lincoln Review, a local publication, has asked the Commission to provide a summary of the role of the commission, as well as some recent accomplishments, and Rob Loud asked Adeline Naiman if she would mind drafting a summary for submission by the March 10th deadline. Adeline agreed to complete the task.
4)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Anita Scheipers updated the Commission on discussions about improving the walkway access to the voting location at the Smith School. She stated the school administration will allow a railing to be installed if it is done to code and does not interfere with routine access to the grounds by the children. She stated Timothy Higgins prefers that such a project be funded within existing operating budgets and will not require use of a reserve fund transfer. Anita an Scheipers and Debbie Dorsey ( not present) have agreed to continue to work with the schools and town clerk to push this project along. She will update the Commission as to next steps at the April meeting.
