Commission on Disabilities - September 4, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m.
Present:  Rob Loud, Adeline Naiman, Kathy Deickler, Deborah Dorsey, Anita Scheipers

1.      Susan Brooks was present to talk about the “Automark” machine which is a 65 pound machine which is a marker.  The voter would be given a ballet and then put the ballot into the machine which can be operated by touch, by audio directions, by a straw or by Braille.  What the machine does is marks the ballot for the voter. Tabulator has an LD screen and will either read back or visually display the votes.  It was described as an oversized suitcase.   The machine costs $5,000 each – it has been underwritten by the Feds, but the state gives training.  There is only one year of maintenance provided by the state.

Because the machines are so sensitive – they have to be reprogrammed for each election.  Only two or three companies that have been contracted by the state can reprogram the Automark.

Susan Brooks has no idea how many people in Lincoln would use this machine.  She said that she will check back with Kathy D. in Februrary 2008 so as to include the Automark in her press release reminding all to vote.

Also the LCD could write an article about it – Susan has a readout from the State describing the machine.
2.      Dorsey said that she would do a video on how to use the Automark machine to air on cable before the March 2008 elections.
3.      Next meeting 10/2/07.  Meeting adjourned at 12:35 p.m.

Respectfully submitted:  Deborah Dorsey, Acting Secretary, LCD
