RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING
DECEMBER 19, 2005
Present: Noah Eckhouse, John Dumont, Ingrid Neri, Jane Tatlock (minutes) Susie Collins, Stacey Mulroy and Dan Pereira
Minutes: The minutes of the November 21, 2005 meeting were reviewed and accepted.
Finances: The Recreation Department is not turning the profit of years past. However, it is holding steady with programming. Enrollment is down in programs, especially those for middle school students. Expenditures are less than a year ago. Stacey reformatted the department’s brochure and there has been a great response.
Capital Planning: Dan and Noah made a request to the Capital Planning Committee for a Tot Lot. An estimate has been received for a full install of $50,000. It was decided not to do a community install due to marginal savings and liability issues.
Susie reported on the CPA’s response to the Tot Lot request. They had asked that the top end of the expense estimate be requested. If the entire amount is not used, refund it. This is preferable to under estimating and then having to ask for more.
School Facility: The school is asking that the department cover utilities for the A Pod. This means between $14,000-$26,000. Since this wasn’t in the department’s budget, it will have to be run out of the revolving fund. Some options include: Bumping up user fees and implementing fees for community groups.
Summer Camp: Arielle Eckhaus, the Summer Day Camp Director, has submitted a list of proposals for the 2006 session. The most important recommendation is that the Senior Camp be run separately, with a separate budget, from the K-5 camp. Dan supports her recommendations.
Other: The department needs to focus of more PR for the programs in order to boost enrollment. Suggestions included higher airtime on cable TV, a weekly quarter page summary of activities in The Lincoln Journal, and more and creative usage of the intenet website.
The meeting was adjourned and a fabulous holiday party was held, hosted by Noah Eckhouse.
The next meeting will be January 23, 2006.
