Rec Dept Minutes - January 23, 2006
RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Minutes 1/23/06

The meeting was called to order at 7:45 pm.

Present: Dan Pereira, Ingrid Neri, Susie Collins, Jane Tatlock, Cathy Long, Noah Eckhouse (minutes)

Minutes:  The minutes of the December 19th meeting were approved with some modest corrections.

Finances:  The YTD finances were reviewed and the committee was pleasantly surprised to hear that certain enrollments were up/strong, and that the financial position of the department had improved somewhat.  Continued diligence is required.  Our current cost-to-the-town is $30k, vs. $35k at this time last year.

Summer Camp:  The committee was joined by Arielle Eckhaus, Director of the Lincoln Summer Day Camp.  Arielle put together a long and thoughtful list of ways to improve the camp, and was looking for a discussion of her ideas and a sense of support from the committee.  The committee was unanimous in its praise for Arielle's work with the camp and was entirely supportive of her suggested changes, with a few minor constructive questions and suggestions.

Brochures:  Dan presented the department plan to reduce the number of brochures mailed to homes in Lincoln, by using the following schedule: Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer (includes Codman Pool) and Camp.

Tot Lot Playground Update:  Noah, Susie and Dan updated the committee on the process for getting the proposed Tot Lot funded.  The final decision will most likely come at Town Meeting, but indications from the town were positive.

School Buildings and Pod "Ownership":  There was a long discussion about the request form the Schools to have Recreation take responsibility for the operating costs of the Pod buildings.  Dan and Noah presented information about some of the informal conversations taking place with Anita Schiepers, Mickey Brandmeyer and Sandy Hessler.  The committee will wait for a formal notification form the School Committee before taking any action, though discussions will continue in the meantime.
