Rec Dept Minutes - June 19, 2006
RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
                                         June 19, 2006

Present: Noah Eckhouse, Ingrid Neri, Jane Tatlock, Susie Collins (minutes), Cathy Long, Stacey Mulroy and Dan Pereira

Minutes: Minutes from 4/20/06 were reviewed and accepted (with the date corrected).

Finances: Numbers from April and May show the same downward trends. No deposits were made in May and a larger June deposit will help make up some of the deficit. Camp and pool enrollments are down. Right now only 70 kids signed up for the first week of camp. (180-190 normal)  Adventure camp is the only one doing well. 20-27 have signed up and it was budgeted for 15. Half as many kids as in the past signed up for the trip to Canobie Park. June 30 is the end of our fiscal year. We need to close the books and decide what we present to the town. We’ll have a conference call Thurs. June 29 at 7:00PM.

Facilities: Stacey gave an update on Codman Pool. It took a little longer than usual to get the pool painted because of the rain. Had to go with Puraqua because Barry was unable to get the job done in time for our opening date. He claimed he didn’t get the email with the date. So it cost a little more but the pool looks great. Right now we have 156 families signed up usually membership around 290. Stacey has 20 guards, 70% returnees. Increase in pay helped.  The baby pool still needs work. Stacey hired a handy-man named Ted Jones to get some odd jobs finished at the pool. Stacey reported one incident with a lifeguard that will need evaluation. The town has requested this guard have a medical check out before she is allowed to return to the job.
Dan showed the board a first draft of a tot lot plan presented by Obrien & Sons. Our board all agreed it looked great but should be pared back slightly to come in under the $50,000 budget with enough left over to fix the border fence.

Programming: As already stated, camp enrollment is slow. Those who requested financial aid are using what we offered. The camp staff is in good shape. Camp is fully hired. Next week is orientation. They will have a meet your counselor cookout. Noah suggested perhaps counselors could call campers the night before and introduce themselves and urge them to come to the cookout. Recreation is not having a float in this year’s July 4th parade, so nothing to report there.  The entrance to the pool will be repaved for July 4th so it will look great. The kids’ triathlon all set for July 1st. They have a web site and will cut off enrollment at 300.

Other Issues: The Master Planning Committee for the town is under way and has requested that we participate by answering some questions which Dan handed out to each of us. We will try to complete this over the summer.

Next Meetings: September 18 and October 16.
