Rec Dept Minutes - September 18, 2006
 RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
                                         September 18, 2006

Present: Noah Eckhouse (minutes), Ingrid Neri, Jane Tatlock, Susie Collins, Cathy Long, Ted Julian, Stacey Mulroy and Dan Pereira

Minutes: Minutes from 6/19/06 were reviewed and accepted (with minor corrections).

Finances:
FY ’06 End of Year Report:
-       Rec achieved 92% cost recovery for the year, costing the Town a total of $24k
-       Pool revenues were generally flat
-       Camp revenues were generally lower
-       Swim lessons showed a steep decline
-       Tennis memberships were also down
-       The Schools have reclaimed the space in the POD that Rec was to have assumed control of, rendering our expense responsibility agreement a moot issue.  Dan made a point to say that this loss of expected Recreation space would affect community groups needing space.
-       August general fund numbers were not available from the town.  Dan will circulate via email when they are ready.

Celebrations Committee: Nancy Pimental and Nancy Felsheim joined the meeting to discuss Rec taking a more active role in “owning” the 4th of July fireworks show at Codman Field.  The Recreation Committee applauded the work of Nancy, her family, and the Celebrations Committee for producing such wonderful events in years past.  After much discussion about the process for running the event, the Rec Com decided to form a subcommittee (consisting of Dan, Stacey, Ingrid and Cathy) to study the issue further and make a recommendation to whole committee about increased involvement.

Some Stats about the 4th of July Fireworks:
1)      Contracts for the event are queued up and signed between November and February
2)      Approximately 5k people attend the fireworks
3)      Dan and Stacey have been very involved in the 4th for years, providing the pool, the bathrooms and other coordination throughout the day.
4)      Food has been provided by the vendors as their own sub-business.  It has been scaled way back in recent years
5)      The Explorers handle the parking.  Celebrations provide 3 adults to handle the cash.
6)      The glow stick business can be a huge moneymaker.

Facilities: Stacey gave an end of year summary on Codman Pool. It sounds like one of the smoothest summers in recent memory.  Kudos to the pool team!  Specific comments:
-       Good year
-       Supervisors were great
-       Some guards have outgrown the job and should be encouraged to retire
-       Stacey is looking at implementing a Jr. Lifesaving program as a feeder program for lifeguards and WSIs.

Tot Lot:  A new set of plans was received from our playground consultant and the feedback was positive.  The committee stressed the importance of getting the playground in this fall.

Programming: Continues to be a concern.  Numbers declining.

Next Meetings: October 16, November 20, December 18 (holiday party!)
